6 Tips for Not Going Off of the Rails During the Holidays

Regardless of your health goals, whether that is to eat better, exercise more, drink more water, have more energy, sleep better, improve your mental clarity, manage your stress, lose weight, etc, we all tend to struggle during the holiday season! With a little awareness, mindfulness & planning, this year can be different! Here are SIX great tips that will help you to enjoy this holiday season without completely going off of the rails!

1 Predecide

Before each special event, ask yourself a few questions & predecide:

  • What do I really want to enjoy?

  • What am I willing to pass on? How will I course correct?

  • What will hold me accountable?

  • If I’m including alcohol, how many drinks will I consume?

2 Don’t Starve Yourself

STARVING yourself all day to SAVE calories for the big meal/special event will only make your more ravenous & encourage extreme overeating & bad choices. Instead, have light & healthy options for the other meals & snacks on the day of the event.

3 Be Mindful

Slow down, make memories, focus on the connections and be grateful for the special opportunity to be with friends and family! Also, alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water.

4 Follow the 80/20 Rule

Don’t write off the entire holiday season for 5-10 special events, meals & gatherings. You can still enjoy Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, NY Eve, NY Day, Office Christmas Party, Cookie Exchange, Ornament Exchange, etc. & fall within the 80/20 Rule.

Keep in mind that 3 meals x 31 days in December = 93 opportunities. 5-10 meals is less than 10% of the total!

5 Clean Slate Policy

If you stray from your plan, wipe the slate clean and move forward with your goal in mind. Don’t beat yourself up, fall into “all-or-nothing-thinking” and throw in the towel! Get right back to your commitments!

6 Grace + Replace Concept

First, extend yourself grace. You are human and this is a special time of year. Second, replace any negative self talk with positive self talk and let go of the desire to self-sabotage! Lastly, course correct ASAP! The longer you are off the rails, the harder it is to get back on!

With a little awareness, planning and reflection, you can make THIS holiday season the healthiest one yet!
